20 Powerful AW Tozer Quotes

If there is one thing I have learned in my walk with the Lord, it is to learn from those who have gone before me. Those who are wiser, more experienced, have a greater understanding than I do, and have something far greater to offer than I could ever achieve on my own. A.W. Tozer is one of those men that I have learned to glean from his incredible knowledge, experience, and life in the Lord. And, though he is long since passed away, his legacy still lives on. If you have not read his works, I HIGHLY encourage you to start.

Three books that will benefit you greatly are:

The Pursuit of God

The Crucified Life: How To Live Out A Deeper Christian Experience

The Knowledge of the Holy

Christ gave us not the tattered leftovers of His time; He gave us all the time He had. But some of us give Him only the leftovers of our money and of our talents and never give our time fully to the Lord Jesus Christ who gave us all. Because He gave us all, we have what we have; and He calls us “as He is, so are we in this world.” – The Crucified Life

  1. I was doing a search of quotes by Tozer, wondering what his views were on civil rights, helping the the poor & needy, treatment of native Americans & other marginalized groups of people.

Does anyone know where Tozer stood on these topics?

He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me?” declares the LORD. – Jeremiah 22:16

    • Hey Perry, sorry I don’t have any information on your questions. Honestly, I’m not sure where you would find his stance on those issues outside of a google search. If you are able to find something please feel free to share it in another comment here. All the best.

  2. I don’t understand why almost NOBODY uses one loaf in the communion (1Co 10:17 seeing that we, who are many, are one bread, one body: for we are all partake of the one bread). Who is wrong ?? it seems like the church is as fragmented on this subject as the little wafers that are used.

  3. When it says in (1Co 10:17 seeing that we, who are many, are one bread, one body: for we are all partake of the one bread) why do almost everyone use little wafers? It seems churches are as fragmented in this instruction as they are with the loaf….

    • Jerry, I believe Paul is illustrating Christ as the “one bread.” Christ is the bread of life. Wafers are used as a substitute to illustrate in remembrance of the last supper which was on passover and had unleavened bread. The wafers are easier and less messy than a loaf of bread for a large congregation. — I honestly believe it is a minor issue when it comes to Christ. If we make it a law unto ourselves that we must use a loaf of bread, we place a burden upon ourselves that we shouldn’t.

  4. There was a Tozer’s quote in a theology textbook I had years ago that described the Christian. It started something like “A Christian is an odd… (paraphrasing) He believes in what he can’t see, ….dies in order to live…”
This was the most memorable A.W. Tozer quote I ever knew, and I can’t find it anywhere. Do you know where it can be found?

    • Nancy, I do not know where it is, but I am definitely intrigued to read it. I will look and ask around to see if I can find it.

    • “A real Christian is an odd number, anyway. He feels supreme love for the One whom he has never seen; talks familiarly every day to Someone he cannot see; expects to go to heaven on the virtue of Another; empties himself in order to be full; admits he is wrong so he can be declared right; goes down in order to get up; is strongest when he is weakest; richest when he is poorest and happiest when he feels the worst.

He dies so he can live; forsakes in order to have; gives away so he can keep; sees the invisible; hears the inaudible’ and knows that which passeth understanding.” — A. W. Tozer.

      Is this the one?

  5. Did Tozer make this statement, “God can only use you greatly if He has hurt you very deeply” ?

    • Yes Donald, I have heard the quote this way as well: “It is doubtful whether God can bless a man greatly until He has hurt him deeply.” – I’m not sure off the top of my head on the exact wording or what the citation is from.
