Anybody that paid attention to the news this fall saw the miraculous happen. The curse was finally broken. The Chicago Cubs went to, and won the World Series. But, was there ever really a curse to begin with?
In 1945 Billy Goat Tavern owner William Sianis was asked to leave the ball park during game 4 of the 1945 World Series at Wrigley field because the smell of his goat was bothering other fans. When leaving Sianis made the comment,
Them Cubs, they ain’t gonna win no more.
And so, the curse was born.
The Cubs lost the World Series that year and haven’t won one since, until this year.
Now, I don’t follow sports near as much as I did when I was a young child. I can’t even tell you who plays for what team unless they are a pretty regularly known name. Here’s what I can tell you, I was born right outside Chicago, and I’m a Chicago sports team fan; Cubs, Bears, Bulls, and Blackhawks.
When the Cubbies went to the World Series I cried. When the Cubbies won the World Series I cried a lot for a few days. It was amazing. It was exhilarating. The curse of the goat was FINALLY broken!
Here’s what I’ve come to learn about this whole celebration.
There was never a curse to begin with.
Now, you might be asking yourself, what the heck does the Cubs winning the World Series have anything to do with Living By Christ? Well here’s what…
Some of you are living just like the Chicago Cubs did for the last 71 years. There was no curse on the Cubs. They only thought there was, and so they fulfilled their own prophecy.
Somewhere someone told you you weren’t good enough, you would never amount to much, you grew up on the wrong side of the tracks, you’re going to be an addict just like your parent, you’re too ugly, you’re worthless. Whatever the curse was they spoke over you, you began to believe it…just like the Cubs.
I don’t know if the “curse” was spoken over you before or after you came to Christ, but Paul tells us,
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. – 2 Corinthians 5:17
And Jesus himself tells us in John 8:36,
So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
If you are in Christ and Christ dwells within you, the curses spoken by men have no hold over you. The creator is the only one who is able to bless or curse the created.
Statistics say my brother, sister, and I should be a drain on society. We grew up on the wrong side of the tracks, in a broken and abusive home. We should be in jail or addicts of some kind.
We didn’t let that “curse” stop us, because we refused to believe there was a curse.
Some of you need to stop believing you’re under a curse too. Some of you need to stop living under a death sentence of a curse spoken over you.
There is no curse.
There never was.
The enemy desires to steal, kill, and destroy every child of God. You will never win your “World Series” of who God called and designed you to be until you stop believing in a curse that was never there.
So I’ll say it again, you’re only cursed if you think you are. Be free in Jesus’ name.
