There are hundreds of books on time management and organization, but none of them can prepare you for the black holes for time wasting of Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. Trust me I am definitely not at the top of the class when it comes to mastering this area, but I want to share with you a challenging thing I came across last week.
As I was doing my morning Bible reading I came across a scripture that really challenged me and how I am spending my time, and what I am putting before myself.
In Psalm 101:3 David made a declaration to the Lord,
I will set no worthless thing before my eyes
It was one of those spiritual gut punches when I read that. How passionate was David to dwell on the Lord that he declared not to set any worthless thing in front of his eyes, yet how often do we kill time scrolling through the same feed on social media channels?
Like I already admitted I can be horrible about this. Immediately another quote came to mind. AW Tozer (or “The Toze” as my wife and I call him) is credited with saying,
When you kill time, remember that it has no resurrection.
Talk about gut punch number two!
What if we took a page out of David’s book and declared to never set anything that is worthless before our eyes. I mean honestly, how many times do we have to scroll over the same Facebook or Instagram feed waiting to see if there is anything new?
Take this blog for instance. If you don’t find any value in it, by all means I ask that you please stop reading it and find information and articles that will benefit you. I do my best to speak life into my readers, but I know what I write isn’t for everyone. I don’t say that pridefully, hatefully, or any other “-ully” that it might get misconstrued as being. I say it to encourage you to find things that will benefit you. Find things that will help you grow in your walk with the Lord, in your marriage, and in your life.
On the other hand if you do find the benefit in the articles posted here why not sign up for updates to be delivered straight to your email. That way you don’t have to do that endless hypnotic scrolling on Facebook and hope you come across it.
(By the way, I try not to waste your time or inbox space. I only post 2-3 times each week, and when it is something I believe will benefit my readers. Typically posts are on MWF and get posted around 8:30am CST.)
I encourage you, find books, blogs, magazines, articles, and movies/shows that will benefit you and help you grow. Remember stagnation only breeds death and disease.
Yes, even throw in a couple animal or other goofy videos every now and then because laughter is beneficial too. Proverbs even tells us,
A joyful heart is good medicine. – Proverbs 17:22
So I challenge you to evaluate how you are spending your time, as I am doing the same. Let’s work on this together. Let’s make it a conscious effort to not set anything worthless before our eyes, because once we kill that time we can’t resurrect it.
