I know what you’re thinking. “What the heck is VIP Kid?”
VIP Kid is a Chinese based company that connects native English speakers with Chinese students, in order to teach the students how to speak English. As of September 2017 there are 20,000 teachers and over 200,000 students. They are projecting to double those numbers in the next year.
I know what the second thing is you are thinking. “Is this really legit?”
If you are looking for a way to supplement your family income, or to work from home part time, or even full time, VIP Kid is a great option for you.
Here’s the details on who can do it:
- A native English speaker from North America.
- Must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree, (in anything).
- Anyone who likes to be their own boss.
- You have any teaching experience (professional, camps, Sunday school, youth groups, etc)
- Teaching experience is a plus, but not absolutely necessary.
- Teaching ESL, English as a Second Language, to Chinese students from ages 5-12.
- 25 Minute sessions
- No creating lesson plans or teaching materials.
- All the materials are created for you. You just have to review them and focus on the objectives, and target vocabulary/sentences in each lesson.
- You can make your own schedule.
- Work as much or as little as you want.
The hiring process actually moves pretty quick. In theory you could be hired in less than a week.
Interview: After your application is submitted, if they consider you VIP Kid material, they will offer you an interview. You can do an “in person” Skype interview, or you can do a recorded interview. In the interview you will do a small sample lesson. If you pass this you will move on to Mock Class 1.
Mock Class 1 (1 hour) – Mock class 1 is you presenting an actual lesson to a mentor teacher. Don’t worry, they give you all the materials to teach from. Your job is to present it. It’s 15 minutes of teaching a lower level class. Some constructive criticism time (about 10 minutes or so). 10 minutes of teaching an upper level course, and then some constructive criticism again. When you pass this section you go on to a Mock Class 2.
Mock Class 2 (1 Hour) – In MC2 you will present a full lesson of a level 5 student (upper level). Again, they provide you with all the necessary material. After you finish, the mentor teacher will talk to you about how you did.
You will typically find out if you passed or failed within a day or two, but it can take up to three days.
What Does VIP Kid Pay?
The pay can be a little confusing to understand, but here is a basic breakdown.
You can earn anywhere from $14-$26 per hour based on where they rank you.
Base pay – $7-9 per 25 minute session ($14-18/hour)
Participation Incentive: +$1 per session participation incentive (showing up on time and finishing on time) (= up to +$2/hr)
Quantity Incentive: +$1 per session if you teach more than 45 sessions in a month. (= up to +$2/hr)
Short Notice Incentive: +$2 per session if you teach a class that is booked less than 24 hours prior to the time slot. (= up to +$4/hr)
Referral Bonus: The base successful referral bonus is $80 each. They run incentives at various times to earn up to $100+ per successful referral.
The other confusing thing about the pay is this: once you pass your interview, they will tell you what they will pay you if they hire you. This does not mean you are hired. You still have to go through the mock class(es). On seldom occasion they may hire a person after only 1 mock class, but don’t bet on it.
They also tend to offer additional incentives during the month of December, and during the summer months.
Are There Any Cons Working For VIP Kids?
There are a couple of cons to working with Vip Kids. You are considered an independent contractor. You will be responsible for your own taxes, and self employment tax rates are typically higher than when you work for someone else.
I recommend finding a good tax professional to take advantage of every possible deduction you can to benefit your tax bill.
Also, the hours can be a little funky depending on your time zone because they are on the other side of the world. (Beijing is +13 hours from CST) But, the beauty is you can work from anywhere in the world, as long as you meet the above requirements.

I can help you answer any questions about the process, give you tips and tricks that I use in my classes, and do my best to ensure you get hired.
