Today America inaugurates Donald Trump as its 45th President. The country is extremely divided over the outcome of this election. The possibility of what may transpire over the next four to eight years spreads either hope or horror among the masses. Today I share with you why I will not pledge my allegiance to Donald Trump.
Since it became apparent that Donald Trump was going to be the Republican frontrunner in the 2016 presidential election, much of America has been “up in arms” so to say.
He has a history of saying and doing things that frighten many people. While to others what he speaks of brings hope for a greater America. To those with their eyes properly focused though, they too will not pledge their allegiance to this man, and here is what I mean.
All powers are put in to place by God
At times God uses leaders to prosper a nation, and at others he uses them to punish. Only time will tell what will come of the Trump presidency.
I may like or dislike the policies of any president at a given time, but I will never swear my allegiance to any of them: Republican, Democrat, or Independent.
I will respect them, pray for them, and honor them, as should you, regardless of voting stance, because God calls us to respect the leaders put in to power over us. Every leader that is put in to place is there because of God’s ordination, more so than man’s inauguration.
Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. – Romans 13:1-2
While we honor and respect our leaders, our allegiance is to Christ alone.
You are all one
There is a great dividing wall of hostility between those on the political left and those on the political right, much in part to American media; and much in part to our own personal biases which have clouded the waters of our Spirits. Regardless of which side of the aisle we stand on, we are all one in Christ.
Right now there are those within the body of Christ standing on both sides of the aisle and at each other’s throats, rather than uniting under the banner of Christ. Paul again reminds us,
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. – Galatians 3:28
If you voted for trump…great.
If you voted for Bernie or Hillary…great.
Beyond your political vote for the leaders of this earthly realm, your only true allegiance should be to Christ. Don’t allow a president who will be gone from office in four to eight years to destroy your relationship with those within the body of Christ. This goes for this election or any election.
Too often we allow trivial pursuits and things that mean nothing in light of eternity to drive a wedge between members of the body. Do you not see this is exactly what the enemy wants.
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. – John 10:10
Abundant life does not depend on whether a Republican or Democrat holds office. Abundant life is found in pledging allegiance to Christ alone.
This earth is not our home
I’ve seen many people hailing Trump as a savior of sorts.
Trump is not the savior. Only Christ is!
I have also seen many people condemning Trump as no less than calling him the anti-christ.
Trump is not the anti-Christ; and if he is, that is only good news for believers as that means we will be reunited with Christ sooner rather than later.
Saints, stop giving over your rights, responsibilities, and allegiances to a government that is of this world. It was never the government’s job to take care of the orphans, widows, and the poor. It was the job of the body of Christ. We are to be ambassadors from the Kingdom of heaven to a hurting world.
Your allegiance and responsibility is to Christ and obeying his commands, to which there is no law against (Gal. 5:23). Your only allegiance is to Christ.
This world is not your home. Once again Paul tells us,
For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ – Philippians 3:20
This earth is simply an outpost, a spiritual embassy for the kingdom of Heaven. This is why I will never pledge my allegiance to any president, and neither should you. Honor your true citizenship and treat each other like the brothers and sisters in Christ that you are.
Take your eyes off of the material and finite aspects of this world and focus them on the centrality of an eternal Christ. He who has an ear let him hear the words of Colossians 3:1-3,
Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
Christ is all, my friends. Do not pledge your allegiance to Donald Trump, or any man for that matter. Pledge your only allegiance to Christ, and Christ alone.
Whether you are among the millions who voted for Trump, or among the millions that voted against him, join me and countless others as we pray for Donald Trump and the incredible responsibility he holds in these years that lay ahead. Only time will tell if his role is to prosper the nation or to punish it.
Whatever the case may be, He was placed there by God. Most importantly in light of this election, do not lose sight of Christ and his beautiful bride because of this presidency.
